SUMMARY:HEROIC ASPIRATIONS
DESCRIPTION:Dai Wei’s The Dancing Moonlight opens with shimmering color and rhythmic lift\, transforming poetic imagery into vivid orchestral motion. That sense of sweep and atmosphere finds a Romantic counterpart when pianist Jon Nakamatsu returns for Edward MacDowell’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in D Minor\, a work that bridges European tradition and an emerging American voice. After intermission\, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3\, “Eroica” crowns the evening with a bold reimagining of the symphony’s scale and emotional reach. Each work\, whether through color\, virtuosity\, or structural daring—creates a journey of aspiration and transformation. \n\nPROGRAM\nWEI: The Dancing Moonlight \nMACDOWELL: Piano Concerto No. 2 in D Minor\, Op. 23 \nBEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major\, op.55 (Eroica) \n\nTHANK YOU TO OUR PEC MASTERWORKS SERIES SPONSORS!\n \nMasterworks Series Title Sponsor \n \nExclusive Automobile Sponsor \n \nOfficial Parking Sponsor \n \nOfficial Audiology Sponsor \n \nMasterworks Media Sponsor \nThank you to everyone who welcomed new Music Director Austin Chanu with a gift:\nAnonymous (8)\nKatherine & Mark Adelson\nJohanna Ames\nDoug & Maureen Anderson\nStacey Balduf\nMichael Barkun\nHelen Beale\nElizabeth & Paul Berry\nDiana Biro & Eric Rogers\nPaul G. SUMMARY:ECHOES OF AMERICA
DESCRIPTION:Dance\, fall in love\, hold your breath\, and walk out into the light.\nAustin Chanu conducts a night of American music\, with mezzo-soprano Nikola Printz.\nSome concerts give you one feeling. This one takes you through just about all of them\, and sends you home lighter than you came. \nIt starts at a party. A woman crashes a fancy state dinner\, hangs paper lanterns around the room\, and starts dancing by herself. Then the man in the giant portrait on the wall steps down to join her\, and the two of them foxtrot like they’re young again. It’s Chairman Mao and his wife\, imagined by an American composer\, and the music swoons like an old Hollywood movie. \nThen it gets personal. Nikola Printz sings Good Morning\, Beauty\, four songs about long-term love: the wonder of waking up next to your person\, the ruts every couple hits\, and the humor that gets you through. Printz knows these songs well. They’ve sung the full cycle with orchestras on the West Coast. \nAfter intermission\, the room goes still. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings is the music people turn to when they need to grieve or remember together. You’ve probably heard it in a film or at a memorial without knowing its name. Hearing it live\, in a room full of people holding their breath at the same time\, is something else. \nThen Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring opens the windows. It’s bright\, open music about a young couple starting a life together\, and near the end you’ll hear an old tune called Simple Gifts. You’ll probably know it the second it starts. \nBring someone you love. Bring the friend who could use a good night out. Get dinner downtown\, come early for the pre-concert talk if you want the backstory\, and give yourself two hours that cover the whole range of what a person can feel. \nKeep going \nThe PEC Inc. Masterworks Series has four more nights this season: Heroic Aspirations in January\, Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony in March\, Brahms Requiem in April\, and Shostakovich Symphony 5 in May. Build a FlexPack with the concerts you want\, up to 10\, and pay subscriber pricing for all of them. \nBUILD A FLEXPACK\n\nGOOD TO KNOW\nHow long is it? About two hours\, including a 20-minute intermission. \nWhat should I wear? There’s no dress code. Dress up if you feel like it\, or come as you are. \nWhen should I get there? Doors open at 6:00 PM. The pre-concert talk starts at 6:30\, and the concert starts at 7:30. There’s a full bar and a snack bar in the lobby. \nWhen do I clap? Some pieces have short pauses between sections. Most people hold applause until the whole piece is finished. When Austin turns around to face the audience\, that’s your cue. \nWhere do I park? The Oncenter garage on E. Adams Street and the Oncenter lot on Harrison Street are right next to the theater. More parking options here. \nRunning late? No problem. You’ll be seated at the next break in the music. \n\nPROGRAM\nThe Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra (Adams): John Adams wrote this while working on his opera Nixon in China. Madame Mao crashes a presidential banquet\, Mao steps down from his portrait\, and the two of them dance back in time to when they were young. \n\nGood Morning\, Beauty (Heggie)\, with Nikola Printz\, mezzo-soprano: Four songs by Jake Heggie\, with words by Taylor Mac. Romantic and funny\, about what love looks like after the honeymoon. About 20 minutes.\n\nAdagio for Strings (Barber): Slow\, written for the strings alone\, and built on long lines that keep rising. One of the most recognized pieces of American music ever written. \nAppalachian Spring: Suite(Copland): Written for dancer and choreographer Martha Graham. Open\, bright\, and hopeful\, with variations on the Shaker tune Simple Gifts near the end. \n\n  \nTHANK YOU TO OUR PEC MASTERWORKS SERIES SPONSORS!\n \nMasterworks Series Title Sponsor \n \nExclusive Automobile Sponsor \n \nOfficial Parking Sponsor \n  \n \nOfficial Audiology Sponsor \n \nMasterworks Media Sponsor \nTHANK YOU TO OUR CONCERT SPONSOR!\n \nFOUNDATION SUPPORT FOR OUR VETERANS FROM:\n \n

SUMMARY:CELEBRATION AT ST. PAUL'S
DESCRIPTION:You only get one 200th birthday.\nCelebrate St. Paul’s Syracuse with The Syracuse Orchestra and the Syracuse University Oratorio Society.\nSt. Paul’s has been part of downtown Syracuse for 200 years. This fall\, it turns 200\, and we’re throwing it a birthday party. You’re invited. \nPicture a slow Sunday. Lunch downtown. Then you walk into a room full of people who came to celebrate\, the orchestra is tuning up\, and a choir is taking its place. \nWhen all those voices come in with the orchestra\, you feel it before you think about it. You sit up a little straighter. Maybe you reach for the hand next to you. Maybe you just grin. \n\n“The acoustics at St Paul’s Church are amazing!”\n– Audience member at Harmonious Winds \n\nThe whole afternoon is joyful on purpose. One piece was written as a thank-you. The other was written to feel like a fiesta. Most of the singing is in Latin\, and the feeling translates on its own. \nBring your mom. Bring the friend who sings in a choir. Bring the neighbor who’s walked past St. Paul’s a thousand times and never been inside. You’ll be back out by 4:15 with the rest of your Sunday still ahead of you\, and you’ll have been part of something that only happens once. \nStay for the reception \nWhen the music ends\, stick around. There’s a reception afterward\, and it’s a chance to talk with the people you just shared the afternoon with. \n\n“The reception after the concert was a wonderful connection with friends.”\n– Audience member \n\n\n“Being able to connect with people afterwards at the reception. Good idea for a small concert.”\n– Audience member  \n\nKeep your Sundays full \nThe Rapid Response Monitoring Casual Series has four more Sunday afternoons at St. Paul’s this season: Voices of Spring in January\, Strings of Hope in February\, Latin Rhythms in March\, and Baroque Splendor in April. Build a FlexPack with the concerts you want\, up to 10\, and pay subscriber pricing for all of them. \nBUILD A FLEXPACK\n\nGOOD TO KNOW\nHow long is it? About an hour and 15 minutes\, no intermission. \nWhat should I wear? There’s no dress code. Sunday afternoon clothes are perfect. \nWhen should I get there? Doors open at 2:00 PM. The concert starts at 3:00. \nWhere do I park? St. Paul’s has a free lot right next to the building\, off E. Fayette Street. Heads up: E. Fayette is closed between Montgomery and S. State while a garage is being demolished\, so come in from the west. More parking details here. \nIs it accessible? Yes. There’s an accessible entrance straight from the parking lot. \nWhen do I clap? Both pieces have several sections with short pauses in between. Most people hold applause until the whole piece is finished. \n\nPROGRAM\nSt. Paul’s Suite (Holst): Gustav Holst taught music at a girls’ school in London for almost 30 years. The school built him a soundproof room so he could compose\, and one of the first things he wrote in it was this thank-you for the student string orchestra\, named after the school: St. Paul’s. In the finale\, an old English dance tune starts quietly\, then the cellos come in with Greensleeves. The two tunes run side by side\, faster and faster\, until they finish together. About 12 minutes. \nMagnificat (Rutter)\, with the Syracuse University Oratorio Society: John Rutter was inspired by the joyful street celebrations held for Mary in Hispanic cultures\, with singing\, dancing\, and processions\, and he wanted this to feel like a fiesta. It opens bright and quick. In the quieter middle\, a soprano sings a melody and the whole choir sings it back\, and one movement is built on a 15th-century English poem that compares Mary to a rose. \n\n  \nTHANK YOU TO OUR SERIES SPONSORS!\n \nCasual Series Title Sponsor \n \nExclusive Automobile Sponsor \n

SUMMARY:THE HAUNTED ORCHESTRA: JAMESVILLE-DEWITT HS
DESCRIPTION:Jamesville-DeWitt gets haunted Thursday night\nLive Halloween music for every age\, plus a costume contest with prizes.\nIt starts before the music does. \nThe Jamesville-DeWitt High School auditorium is full of costumes. A vampire is waving at a pirate two rows back. A toddler in a bumblebee suit is standing on Mom’s lap to get a better look at the stage. \nThen one instrument plays a single note\, and the whole orchestra answers it at once. Violins\, horns\, drums\, all tuning up together in one big swirling cloud of sound. \nThen silence. The conductor lifts the baton. \nAnd J-D is officially haunted. \nHearing an orchestra in person is loud in the best way. The cellos growl. The cymbals crash so hard you jump\, then laugh that you jumped. When everyone plays at once\, the sound fills every inch of the room\, and you along with it. \nYou’ll hear the shark sneak up. You’ll hear skeletons dance at midnight and a mountain king’s march turn into a stampede. And when “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas starts\, good luck keeping your feet still. By the end\, there’s a superhero and a very small skeleton dancing in the aisle\, and a grandpa trying hard not to join them. \nCostumes on\, J-D \nThere’s a costume contest with prizes. Two days before Halloween\, it’s the perfect test run. Will the wings stay on? Does the mask fit? Can the dinosaur tail handle stairs? Find out Thursday. \nBring Jamesville. Bring DeWitt. Bring everybody. \nThe neighbors with the preschoolers. The friend who’s had their costume planned since July. Grandma and Grandpa\, who’ll be the first ones cheering at the costume contest. \nCostumes welcome. Everybody’s welcome. \n\nBEFORE YOU GO\nWho’s it for? Everybody. Little kids\, big kids\, parents\, grandparents\, neighbors. \nHow long is it? About 30 minutes\, no intermission. \nWhat should we wear? A costume\, if you’ve got one. Otherwise\, whatever’s comfortable. \nWhen should we get there? Doors open 30 minutes before the show. Costume contest check-in at the door. \n\nWHAT YOU’LL HEAR\nJaws (John Williams): The shark theme. It only takes two notes to make everybody nervous. \nDanse Macabre (Saint-Saëns): At midnight\, Death plays the violin and the skeletons dance. Listen for the xylophone. That’s their bones rattling. \nDances of Transylvania (Bartók): Folk dances from Dracula’s home turf. \nThis Is Halloween (Danny Elfman): The Nightmare Before Christmas song plenty of kids can already sing start to finish. \nIn the Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg): A sneaky little march that ends in a full-speed stampede. \n\nTHANK YOU TO OUR SERIES SPONSORS!\n \nTitle Sponsor \n \nExclusive Auto Sponsor \nTHANK YOU TO OUR CONCERT SPONSOR\nTHE RAPHAEL FAMILY\n \n

SUMMARY:THE HAUNTED ORCHESTRA: SOLVAY HS
DESCRIPTION:Something’s in the Solvay High School auditorium\nA Halloween concert for the whole community\, with a costume contest and prizes.\nPicture the Solvay High School auditorium on a Wednesday night. \nNow fill the stage with a full professional orchestra. Fill the seats with witches\, superheroes\, a couple of dinosaurs\, a family of matching pumpkins\, and somebody’s grandpa in the cape he’s been wearing every Halloween for thirty years. \nThe lights go down. \nThen “In the Hall of the Mountain King” begins. Just a few low notes at first\, sneaking along on tiptoe. Then a little louder. A little faster. More of the orchestra joins in\, and more\, until the music is racing\, the drums are pounding\, and every kid in the room is bouncing in their seat. \nThat’s the thing about an orchestra up close. It’s not something you watch. It happens to your whole body. The bass drum shakes the floor. The trumpets make you sit up straight. The violins make the hair on your arms stand up. \nAnd that’s just one piece. There are skeletons dancing at midnight\, a shark you’ll recognize in two notes\, and “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas\, which is very hard to stay in your seat for. \nDress up\, Solvay \nThere’s a costume contest with prizes. Three days before Halloween\, call it the dress rehearsal. Dig out the witch hat\, the dinosaur tail\, the cape that’s been in the closet since last year. Grown-ups\, that includes you. \nBring the whole neighborhood \nThe neighbors with the little ones. The friend who goes all out every Halloween. Grandma and Grandpa\, who’ll want to see the costumes in person. \nCostumes welcome. Everybody’s welcome. \n\nBEFORE YOU GO\nWho’s it for? Everybody in Solvay and beyond. Little kids\, big kids\, parents\, grandparents. \nHow long is it? About 30 minutes\, no intermission. \nWhat should we wear? A costume\, if you’ve got one. Otherwise\, whatever’s comfortable. \nWhen should we get there? Doors open 30 minutes before the show. Costume contest check-in at the door. \n\nWHAT YOU’LL HEAR\nIn the Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg): Starts as a whisper and ends at a full sprint. \nDanse Macabre (Saint-Saëns): Twelve notes on the harp for midnight\, a spooky violin\, and a graveyard full of dancing skeletons. \nJaws (John Williams): Two notes. That’s all it takes. \nDances of Transylvania (Bartók): Folk dances from the land of Dracula. \nThis Is Halloween (Danny Elfman): The Nightmare Before Christmas favorite. Sing along in your head\, or don’t. \n\nTHANK YOU TO OUR SERIES SPONSORS!\n \nTitle Sponsor \n \nExclusive Auto Sponsor \nTHANK YOU TO OUR CONCERT SPONSOR\nTHE RAPHAEL FAMILY\n \n
