DESCRIPTION:A Sunday afternoon with nothing to do but listen\nThe orchestra’s wind section gets the stage to itself for this one. Flutes\, oboes\, clarinets\, bassoons\, and horns\, up close at St. Paul’s. \nBoth pieces come from the late 1800s. Music was getting bigger and more serious then. These two went the other way. They’re clear\, light\, and full of tunes. \nCharles Gounod’s Petite Symphonie means “little symphony.” Gounod was best known for his operas\, and you can hear it. In the second movement\, he gives the flute a solo that sings like an aria. He wrote it for his friend Paul Taffanel\, one of the great flutists of his day. \nAntonín Dvořák’s Serenade in D Minor is built on Czech village dances. One of them keeps shifting its beat on purpose\, so it never sits still. Dvořák wrote the whole piece in about two weeks. Brahms saw the score and called it refreshing. \nConductor Colin Roshak started out as a clarinetist. Darius Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit captures the playful\, jazz-inflected energy of the French avant-garde\, while Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major pairs jazz influenced elegance and rhythmic sparkle. Fill the seats with witches\, superheroes\, a couple of dinosaurs\, a family of matching pumpkins\, and somebody’s grandpa in the cape he’s been wearing every Halloween for thirty years. \nThe lights go down. \nThen “In the Hall of the Mountain King” begins. Just a few low notes at first\, sneaking along on tiptoe. Then a little louder. A little faster. More of the orchestra joins in\, and more\, until the music is racing\, the drums are pounding\, and every kid in the room is bouncing in their seat. \nThat’s the thing about an orchestra up close. It’s not something you watch. It happens to your whole body. The bass drum shakes the floor. The trumpets make you sit up straight. The violins make the hair on your arms stand up. \nAnd that’s just one piece. There are skeletons dancing at midnight\, a shark you’ll recognize in two notes\, and “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas\, which is very hard to stay in your seat for. \nDress up\, Solvay \nThere’s a costume contest with prizes. DESCRIPTION:Jamesville-DeWitt gets haunted Thursday night\nLive Halloween music for every age\, plus a costume contest with prizes.\nIt starts before the music does. \nThe Jamesville-DeWitt High School auditorium is full of costumes. A vampire is waving at a pirate two rows back. A toddler in a bumblebee suit is standing on Mom’s lap to get a better look at the stage. \nThen one instrument plays a single note\, and the whole orchestra answers it at once. Violins\, horns\, drums\, all tuning up together in one big swirling cloud of sound. \nThen silence. The conductor lifts the baton. \nAnd J-D is officially haunted. \nHearing an orchestra in person is loud in the best way. The cellos growl. The cymbals crash so hard you jump\, then laugh that you jumped. When everyone plays at once\, the sound fills every inch of the room\, and you along with it. \nYou’ll hear the shark sneak up. You’ll hear skeletons dance at midnight and a mountain king’s march turn into a stampede. And when “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas starts\, good luck keeping your feet still.
