MEET THE ORCHESTRA

Carol Sasson grew up in Westchester County, NY. She started out as a violinist and fell in love with the viola when a degree requirement at the Hartt School of Music forced her to play it for a semester. She has a Bachelor of Music from Hartt, and a Masters, and Masters of Musical Arts from Yale University.

She feels lucky to have studied with some of the finest teachers of the time, including Raphael Bronstein, Walter Trampler, Harold Coletta and Samuel Kissel. While at Yale, she taught at the Choate School in Wallingford and toured the Northeast with the Pro Musica String Quartet.

In 1974, she joined the Richmond Sinfonia, and for five years, enjoyed the chamber music repertoire and solo performances in their extensive educational programs.

She moved to Syracuse in 1979 to join the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and a few years later, joined the adjunct faculty at Syracuse University.

After 22 years, she retired from SU in order to teach younger, promising students in her private studio, and now, continues to combine her passion for teaching with her love of orchestral performance with Symphoria.

Ms. Sasson has been a judge for the CMM Concerto Competition, the Central New York Music Teachers Association Ensemble Competition, the B# Competition in Utica, and the Liverpool School District Solo Festival.

When not teaching or rehearsing, you can probably find her riding her Connemara horse or walking her Greyhounds, all of whom she credits with helping her to maintain fun and balance in a busy life!
