MEET THE ORCHESTRA

Cellist Gregory Wood is Assistant Principal Cello of the Syracuse Orchestra. He is originally from Port Washington, New York. Greg received his Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music studying with Lynn Harrell and Zara Nelsova. At CCM, he performed the Kabalevsky Cello Concerto No. 1 as a winner of the Concerto Competition. Greg attended the Aspen Music Festival and performed in the Aspen Festival Orchestra.
Greg has a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Syracuse University and a Master’s Degree in Psychology and Counseling from SUNY Oswego. He is Adjunct Professor of Cello at SU’s Setnor School of Music and he has been teaching there since 1987. Greg also taught Cello at Onondaga Community College for 13 years and is continuing to teach private lessons.
Greg was Assistant Principal Cello of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra joining the SSO in 1978. He also has performed in the cello sections of the Detroit and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras. Greg has also performed numerous solo and chamber music recitals. He has performed as soloist in the Bruch Kol Nidre with the Syracuse Orchestra in 2023.
In June of 2025, he gave a masterclass to cello students at the Berkshire Summer Strings in Massachusetts.
When he is not performing or teaching, Greg loves spending time with his family, biking and running. He has run the Zoo Run Run 5k and the E-Race Cancer 12K in memory of his son, Ryan Wood.
