Jamesville-DeWitt gets haunted Thursday night
Live Halloween music for every age, plus a costume contest with prizes.
It starts before the music does.
The Jamesville-DeWitt High School auditorium is full of costumes. A vampire is waving at a pirate two rows back. A toddler in a bumblebee suit is standing on Mom’s lap to get a better look at the stage.
Then one instrument plays a single note, and the whole orchestra answers it at once. Violins, horns, drums, all tuning up together in one big swirling cloud of sound.
Then silence. The conductor lifts the baton.
And J-D is officially haunted.
Hearing an orchestra in person is loud in the best way. The cellos growl. The cymbals crash so hard you jump, then laugh that you jumped. When everyone plays at once, the sound fills every inch of the room, and you along with it.
You’ll hear the shark sneak up. You’ll hear skeletons dance at midnight and a mountain king’s march turn into a stampede. And when “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas starts, good luck keeping your feet still. By the end, there’s a superhero and a very small skeleton dancing in the aisle, and a grandpa trying hard not to join them.
Costumes on, J-D
There’s a costume contest with prizes. Two days before Halloween, it’s the perfect test run. Will the wings stay on? Does the mask fit? Can the dinosaur tail handle stairs? Find out Thursday.
Bring Jamesville. Bring DeWitt. Bring everybody.
The neighbors with the preschoolers. The friend who’s had their costume planned since July. Grandma and Grandpa, who’ll be the first ones cheering at the costume contest.
Costumes welcome. Everybody’s welcome.
BEFORE YOU GO
Who’s it for? Everybody. Little kids, big kids, parents, grandparents, neighbors.
How long is it? About 30 minutes, no intermission.
What should we wear? A costume, if you’ve got one. Otherwise, whatever’s comfortable.
When should we get there? Doors open 30 minutes before the show. Costume contest check-in at the door.
WHAT YOU’LL HEAR
Jaws (John Williams): The shark theme. It only takes two notes to make everybody nervous.
Danse Macabre (Saint-Saëns): At midnight, Death plays the violin and the skeletons dance. Listen for the xylophone. That’s their bones rattling.
Dances of Transylvania (Bartók): Folk dances from Dracula’s home turf.
This Is Halloween (Danny Elfman): The Nightmare Before Christmas song plenty of kids can already sing start to finish.
In the Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg): A sneaky little march that ends in a full-speed stampede.
