This program contains musical influences from early 20th-century Paris. Darius Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit captures the playful, jazz-inflected energy of the French avant-garde, while Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major pairs jazz influenced elegance and rhythmic sparkle. Though Russian by birth, Igor Stravinsky helped make Paris the center of musical modernism in the early 20th century, and the 1919 suite from The Firebird closes the program with shimmering color and triumphant sweep.
